Mac “Hot Corners” for Ubuntu

I’ve had a bit more time recently to play around with Ubuntu and am finding the ‘Ubuntu versions’ of apps that I’ve grown to love on Mac OS X. One of which being Hot Corners which I always use to lock my screen when moving away from it.

Brightside is the Ubuntu app to do the job.

sudo apt-get install brightside

Once installed, go to System, Preferences, Screen Actions. I then checked the “Bottom right corner” and then chose “Start screensaver”. Works a charm.

Be sure that in your Screensaver settings to check the “Lock screen when screensaver is active” option.

Do you have to log out and then back in to get the item added into the Preferences menu?

I had the same problem, you just have to wait a few minutes and it will pop up.

We have to type “brightside-properties” (without quotes) in a terminal, if Screen Actions does not show up System -> Preferences after installing brightside. This will allow us to set the corner properties. To manually create a System -> Preferences menu item with “Screen Actions” in it, I used “Main Menu” under the same System -> Preferences, but I don’t know if this is included in a base ubuntu install (I use Ubuntu Ultimate).

Lake’s comment works. I had to manually install the thing to the system preferences menu. Thanks David and Lake!
